MOUNT PLEASANT – More than 190 artists and 45 local venues have registered to participate in Art Walk Central in August, 2012. Art Walk Central is an art competition being held throughout the Mount Pleasant community from Aug. 1-25. Prize money totals $22,000.
“We’re thrilled at the turnout for this event,” Kathryn Hill, Art Reach Executive Director, said. “Our goal was to register at least 140 artists, so we went well over that number. While the majority of participating artists are from Michigan, entries were also received from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Montana and Texas.”
Art work for this competition will be displayed in public spaces, local businesses, hotels, on the campus of CMU and in the Ziibiwing Cultural Center. Art Walk Central venues agreed to remain open during Art Walk Central hours in the month of August. “We’re overwhelmed with the support that our business community has shown for this event,” stated Kathryn Hill, Executive Director of Art Reach. “Art work will be exhibited in businesses and buildings around town, on the campus of Central Michigan University, at McLaren-Central Michigan, at the Ziibiwing Cultural Center and in outdoor public spaces. With 195 entries, the public should be able to view every art piece and vote for the pieces they like the best.”
In addition to the show, art events have been planned throughout the month of August. “We want to provide opportunities for creativity to our visitors,” stated Hill. “Children’s activities will be available daily, as well as weekend special events.”
The public is encouraged to visit venues to view the art entries and vote for their favorite art pieces. Voting begins at 9 a.m. on Aug. 1 and ends at 5 p.m. on Aug. 22. Voting will take place by either text message or via the computer. A total of $22,000 in awards will be given for Art Walk Central. Prizes for both People’s Choice and for Best Juried Piece (as determined by independent judges) will be awarded in two categories: Youth (age 12-17, $1,000 prizes for each category) and Adult (age 18 and older, $10,000 prizes for each category).
“We’re turning the entire community into an art gallery!” Hill said. “I love the idea of people coming to our town to see the art and be engaged in creativity! We have several community art projects planned for this event, as well as children’s activities available daily.”
