A comedic opera, Pirates of Penzance has a satirical take on ruthless classism in late 19th century England. The opera follows the misfortunes of Frederic, who has been serving as apprentice to the gentlemanly pirates. Sadly for Frederic, his apprenticeship binds him until his 21st birthday, meaning he would serve until his 84th year due to his being a leap year baby.
This literal take on his apprentice contract, paired with his strong sense of duty, results in Frederic’s separation from the beautiful maiden Mable. The interactions between a very modern major-general, his daughters, a group of ineffective policemen and, of course, the hopeless band of pirates, makes for a storyline full of mishaps, misfortunes and misunderstandings.
Central Michigan University’s Opera Theatre will present the entire production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance at 7:30 p.m. March 15-16 and at 2 p.m. on March 17. The event will be held in the Staples Family Concert Hall on the campus of CMU.
Art Reach is located at 111 E. Broadway St. in downtown Mt. Pleasant. Performances are held on the first Wednesday of every month. For more information about the Let’s Do Lunch series, call Art Reach at (989) 773-3689.
