Laker Current staff report
Tuesday was not your typical day at the office for Kim Barnes, executive dean of student and academic support services at MMCC. She spent her day in a big blue ice shanty in front of the Doan Center as one of two “winners“of the “Working in the Great Outdoors” competition.
The contest was held in March as a fundraiser for the “Campaign for Excellence,” which is aimed at raising money for campus improvements, including the construction of the new Center for Liberal Arts and Business on the Summerton campus in Mt. Pleasant.
Jeff Punches, MMCC’s purchasing manager, is the second winner and is expected to spend his day outdoors at the Harrison campus on Thursday, April 25, weather permitting. The two were selected as the campus “favorites” based on popular vote. Each candidate had a canister placed on campus and people were invited to vote (with money) for the person they wanted to see work outside for the day. The candidates with the most money were declared the winners.
Money also is being raised at the “ice shanty offices” through the sale of chili ($2) and hot cocoa ($1). The chili is being billed as a “family recipe” of Mike Jankoviak, MMCC’s vice president of academic services. Stop by and support the campaign if you get a chance.
