Driving past Mid Michigan Community College on an almost daily basis, I knew I needed to go back to school. I was 36 years old, recently divorced and had been out of school for 18 years. I knew I needed to further my education although I was too scared to just stop and see what MMCC had to offer.
I wanted more than anything to be accepted into the nursing program at MMCC and to become a nurse, and I knew I needed an education to do so. I realized the only way I was ever going to become a nurse was to stop at MMCC and see what they could offer me. So, unable to find a job, frustrated and wondering where my future was going, I knew I had to take the next step and at least stop.
Pulling in the parking lot and being too scared to even get out of the car, I drove off. I did this four or five times until one day I took the leap and turned off the ignition, opened the door and walked through the front doors.
I thought it would look like a typical high school, but I was shocked to see computers for the students to use, tables for the students to study, and a little food nook for a snack or soda while the students studied. It was nothing like I expected. It surely wasn’t high school anymore. This was more for the adult world and I was intrigued enough that I walked into student services.
I was greeted with smiles and friendliness, and the fear I felt each time I pulled into the parking lot diminished instantly. I was where I was supposed to be. I filled out a short form and before I knew it I was sitting in my first English class, excited and ready to learn.
I have struggled along the way, although anything worth working hard for can be a struggle. But there is one thing I can assure you. No matter how hard things seem, your instructor is right there to help you in every way imaginable even if it means staying late just to make sure you succeed. There’s also the learning center where there is always someone on staff to sit down and help you through as well.
So if you are too nervous or scared to go back to school and you really have the desire to better your life, consider at least stopping at MMCC to examine your options. There you just may find success and a means to meet each goal you set. It is worth it to pull in the driveway and take a walk inside to see what your future may have in store for you.
