Monte’s Family Restaurant

Address: 3897 N. Clare Ave., Harrison

Phone: (989) 539-2262

Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; Fri. 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun. 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. During the winter, Monte’s closes 30 minutes earlier each day.

Signature Dishes: Homemade Italian dishes, ranging from your typical pastas and lasagna, to chicken, veal and eggplant parmigiana. Also specialty pizzas and a wide selection of subs and sandwiches, including the Big Monte (roast beef, turkey, ham, salami, American and Provolone cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, mayo and Italian dressing).

Personal Favorite: The lasagna — thick, bubbly and generous — is always a favorite. Some say it’s the best in the area. But my personal favorite is any of the pastas (spaghetti, mostaccioli or rotini) with meat sauce and mushrooms served al forno (topped with mozzarella cheese and baked in the oven).

Atmosphere: First opened in Harrison in 1981, this family-run business provides a comfortable and casual dining experience. The staff is extremely attentive and the service is the best. It recently received a facelift to its exterior, including attractive signs that make the restaurant easier to locate at night. This is truly a family business, with no alcohol served. Monte’s recently received the Great Start Collaborative Family Friendly Five Star Award. The award recognizes businesses within Clare and Gladwin counties that support and encourage children and families through their business practices.

Side Note: Dinners include both homemade soup and salad and a basket of delicious home-baked bread. There are also daily specials and they have recently expanded their dessert selections, if you have a sweet tooth.
