5th Annual Golf Outing supports Lakers athletics

After a great season last year, the Mid Michigan Community College Lakers are gearing up for the fall basketball season. The men’s team, under coach Kaleb House, is hoping to build on the momentum from last year’s playoff run. The women’s team, with Matt Rodenbo as the new coach, is starting fresh with a new team and high expectations.

LakerMASCOTTo help the program continue to grow and build, the Lakers are hosting their 5th annual golf outing to support MMCC athletics on Friday, Aug. 22, at Snow Snake in Harrison. The event is only $65/golfer and will feature food (at the turn and after golf), games, prizes, silent auctions, raffles, and an opportunity to win a car with a hole-in-one.

With more than 6,000 students at MMCC, an athletic program provides a more full-college experience. MMCC’s athletic program is partially funded by a student activity fee, which also supports student activities, clubs, and the student/community fitness center. Unfortunately, those funds fall short of what is needed to support the student athletes and to run a successful program.

The MMCC Lakers are part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as a Division 3 community college. As a Division 3 college, the Lakers cannot offer athletic scholarships, but the program offers an opportunity for students to compete at a collegiate level after high school while earning a degree. A number of students have even transferred to play at colleges and universities after playing for the Lakers.

“Our goal is to continue the development of athletics so they offer a great opportunity for students and provide value to the community,” said Matt Miller, MMCC spokesman. “We’re still a very new program, but we’re optimistic about what the next few years will bring.”

Registration is going on now for this event. Sponsors are also being sought to help with event costs. Contact Matt Miller at mmiller@midmich.edu for more information.

The 4th Annual MMCC Golf Outing for MMCC’s Hockey Club also is coming up on Friday, Aug. 15. See related story.
