A variety of events have been planned for this week, as students return to classes Monday in full force. It will be a week filled with helpful information, including directions to classes, especially at the new Center for Liberal Arts and Business (CLAB) in Mt. Pleasant. The facility opens its doors to students and faculty for the first time this semester.
Students will be given the opportunity to let the college know what their “more” is, be it more knowledge, more social opportunities, more confidence … and take a selfie to post on MMCC’s Facebook page. Take a Welcome Week selfie that shows how you “Get More at Mid” in terms of educational growth, fun, leadership, personal development, friendship, or engagement and Laker Spirit.
Submit your photo to the MMCC Selfie Contest by sending a private message to www.facebook.com/midmich or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Photo captions of 50 words or less will be accepted with photos but are not required.
Winning selfies, which will be determined by the number of “likes” received, will receive prizes. See complete details on the MMCC home page.
Club Days at Mid take place on Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant and Wednesday in Harrison. Club expos will be held for students on both campuses from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during which students can get free treats, drinks and information about joining students clubs. The expo will be in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday in Rooms 186 and 187 in CLAB. The expo in Harrison will be Wednesday along the second-floor hallway.
New college president Dr. Christine Hammond will address students, faculty and staff after the expos. She will speak from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday in Rooms 186 and 187 in Mt. Pleasant and 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday in the Harrison Auditorium.
Thursday is Laker Spirit Day and everyone is asked to show their support by wearing Lakers apparel. There will be a “Hangin’ with Harry” event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant outside the Student Life office, Room 238. For those of you who are new to MMCC, Harry the Blue Heron is the Lakers mascot, and will be greeting students along with some of MMCC’s Laker athletes.
To end Welcome Week, students are invited to a free outdoor movie from 8 -10:45 p.m. in the Heron’s Nest, more commonly known as the Mt. Pleasant Campus lawn. Snacks will be available, but bring your own blankets or chairs. The featured film is Neighbors, a movie starring Seth Rogan, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron, which tells the story of a couple with a newborn baby who face unexpected difficulties after they are forced to live next to a fraternity house.
So pick some Welcome Week events and enjoy some Laker spirit as the fall semester gets under way.
