Sweat Shaker: A race for all mountain biking skills

Registration is now open for the Sweat Shaker Mountain Bike Race, an annual event set for Saturday, June 25, on the Harrison campus of Mid Michigan Community College.

sweat shaker groupPresented by the Northern Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) and Mid Michigan Community College, the Sweat Shaker is part of the MMBA Championship Point Series (CPS), but does feature divisions for every ability level. There are more than 35 divisions covering age ranges from 10 and under to 50 and over.

The MMCC bike trails are set in a forest with massive trees and rolling hills. This trail includes some long, gentle climbs (a few not so gentle) and holds up well to rain. It is a  combination of mostly fast flowing trails, some tighter technical areas, and a couple short sections of hilly two tracks.

The race has an approximately 1/2 mile rollout which sets up the 10 miles of single track. Beginner level is one lap or 10 miles. Sport level is two laps or 20 miles and Elite/Expert level is three laps or 30 miles. Wave starts will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with Elite/Expert, followed by Sport and ending with Beginners.

Proceeds from the race benefit MMCC athletic programs. Funds raised have been used to expand athletic program offerings and purchase equipment and scholarships for student athletes.

The MMBA promotes responsible mountain biking and works toward the goals of common land access and natural resource protection. The MMBA Championship Point Series is Michigan’s premier grassroots racing series and attracts all levels of racers from the first-timer to national and world champions.

Lunch is included and awards for all divisions will be held at approximately 1 p.m. Cash awards will be presented for Elite/Experts and medals for Sport and Beginners. Drinks will be provided but alcoholic beverages are not allowed on campus.

Registration is available online and is available via BikeReg and is open through Thursday, June 23. Registration also is available at the event, but will include an additional $10 fee. Refunds are not available.
