Mid Michigan Community College (MMCC) recently named Jason Byrne the new coach for its men’s and women’s cross country teams. Byrne is from Shepherd, where he was a team captain in both cross country and track and field. He is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a B.S in Education.
After high school, Byrne served four years in the United States Marine Corps. After returning home, he competed in and captained the cross country and track and field teams for Lansing Community College (LCC). In his final year at LCC, he was awarded Academic All-Conference and was a NJCAA National Qualifier in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase.
“I’m super excited to be a part of athletics at MMCC. There is strong support for all the athletic teams from the leadership level, and I look forward to contributing to the future success of our teams,” Byrne said. “MMCC’s cross country program is still in its infancy, but I am confident that we can make a competitive and lasting program, one that our whole school can be proud of. I thank all of the administrators for this opportunity and now it’s time to get to work. Go Lakers!”
Jason has coached varsity cross country and track and field for over 10 years and has coached 21 All-Conference Athletes, 4 Conference Champions, 3 Regional Champions, 13 State Qualifiers, 2 All-State Athletes and 1 State Champion.
“Mid is excited to bring Jason on board as an experienced athlete and coach. His knowledge of the sport of cross country will be valuable to the athletes and for the growth of the program,” said MMCC Athletic Director Ryan Harkrader.
Mid competes in both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA). Currently, MMCC supports five varsity teams: men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s bowling. Recruitment for next year is underway.
